European Capital of Sport Tallinn 2025: skiing

The Song Festival Grounds will be turned into a Winter Centre for the opening event of European Capital of Sport Tallinn 2025.

On Saturday, 18 January at 12:00, visitors can enjoy a day dedicated to skiing, where they can try cross-country skiing, test their aim at a biathlon shooting range, test their courage on a ski jump and snowboard on a cross track set up on the slope of the Song Festival Grounds.

Visitors can try out cross-country ski sleds as well as alpine ski sleds.

A ski waxing workshop will be held in the Glass Hall located indoors at the Song Festival Grounds.


The ceremonial opening of the European Capital of Sport kicks off at 5 PM, featuring LORDI, the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest winner.

Bring the whole family – there will be fun activities for all ages!

 

Cross-country skiing

A skills course will be set up on the slope in front of the arch of the Song Festival Grounds, where coaches from the Estonian Ski Association will host fun and engaging lessons.
The programme includes four 45-minute skiing lessons: two for children and two for adults. No prior experience is required; the coaches will be teaching the basics of cross-country skiing. Experienced skiers can get expert advice on technique.
We recommend bringing your own equipment, but free ski rentals are also available on-site. Equipment can be borrowed by showing a valid ID card.


Pre-registration is required for the skiing lessons, which will open on Monday, 13 January.

Biathlon

An 8-lane shooting range will be set up behind the Song Festival Grounds’ lighthouse. Under the guidance of instructors, visitors can shoot with air rifles on four lanes and with laser rifles on the other four lanes. Shooting will follow a first-come, first-served basis.

Snowboard cross

For the first time, a cross course will be set up on the slope of the Song Festival Grounds, ideal for snowboarding. Instructors will be on-site to give helpful tips and advice.
Please bring your own equipment so you can have as much fun as you can! Snowboard rentals are available on-site, but there is a limited number of snowboards and you will have a limited number of runs with them. Equipment can be borrowed free of charge with a valid ID.

NB! You will have to walk up the slope on your own. Therefore, we recommend using a snowboard, but of course, the slope is also open to skiers.

Ski jumping

In front of the arch of the Song Festival Grounds, a mobile K-3 class ski jump measuring 2.4 metres high will be set up. The ramp is 7 metres long, with a maximum jump distance of 3 metres. The ski jump is suitable for both children and adults, providing an excellent opportunity to try out the sport.
The necessary equipment for jumping is available on-site. Jumping will take place on a first-come, first-served basis, with instructors coordinating the process.

Ski waxing workshop

A top expert in the field will lead two ski waxing workshops in the Glass Hall on the Tallinn Song Festival grounds.
During this 1.5-hour session, participants will learn how to maintain skis and apply various waxes and techniques. Participants will learn about various types of ski waxes and the tools required for waxing. 

Pre-registration is required for the workshop, which will open on Monday, 13 January. The workshop will take place in two sessions.
